How it works

Ghostwriting projects can run anywhere from four months to a year from concept to completed manuscript, depending on the length and where you're starting from. If you come with a detailed outline or partial draft, we can move faster. Depending upon the condition of this manuscript we may even suggest that you skip the ghostwriting process and opt instead for developmental editing. Either way, throughout the process I submit sections for your review — nothing is finalized without your approval. If you need guidance around publishing, marketing, and project management, I will refer you to trusted colleagues.

Fiction Ghostwriting and Collaborative Writing

​Writing a novel is challenging in the best possible way, like putting together the pieces of an intricate puzzle. The process starts with a series of questions. Who are these people? What do they want, and what's standing in their way? What has to happen, and in what order, for the story to land the way you feel it should? That's where we start. Together we'll work through plot and structure, develop your characters from the inside out, and figure out the shape of your story before a single chapter is drafted. Do you want to write some of the chapters? Amazing! Either way, I will get to know your world well enough to live in it.

Query Letters and Book Proposals 

If you're pursuing traditional publishing, literary agents are the gatekeepers, and these documents are critical to getting their attention. A query letter is a one-page pitch that must communicate the heart of your book, why it is marketable right now, and your credentials as an author—all without losing the voice that makes your story worth reading. There is an art to writing a query letter correctly, so hiring a professional who knows the publishing industry is a smart thing to do.

If an agent or traditional publisher likes your query, they may request a full book proposal (this usually applies to non-fiction). Therefore, I always advise clients to research the submission requirements of agents they intend to pitch and have a proposal prepared before sending the query; that way, they won't have to keep the agent waiting. A typical proposal includes:

• An overview of the book

• A marketing comparison listing three to five books in the same genre and with a similar storyline as yours. It also should state how your book can be expected to compete with these other books. 

• A detailed author biography

• A marketing plan that details how you plan to market your book. If you have not done so already, I will help you develop your marketing plan and refer you to marketing experts I trust. 

• Chapter outlines summarizing each chapter of your book

• Sample chapters from your book that best demonstrate your writing and the scope of the story.
